From Tree to Table - What it takes to salvage your tree

At Corbin Wood Studios, we believe that every tree has a story to tell. The tree-to-table process transforms fallen trees into beautiful, functional pieces of furniture, preserving their natural beauty and history. We salvage trees directly from your home or development and handle the entire process from milling to building, turning your fallen tree into furniture that goes right back to the site it came from.

Instead of letting these trees go to waste, we give them a second life by crafting unique pieces that highlight their natural beauty. This approach not only reduces waste but also creates one-of-a-kind furniture that carries the history and character of the original tree.

We've worked with numerous homeowners to salvage their trees, many of which are sentimental to the family and their property. For us, nothing beats the opportunity to be able to provide a hassle free and seamless experience that results in a tree going full circle to live out many more decades of enjoyment on the property in which it grew.

This article aims to be your guide to help you understand what it takes to transform your beloved and valuable trees into furniture and other lumber. We will cover the different stages of the process, the timeline, and the costs involved.

The Tree-to-Table Process

Consultation > Milling > Drying > Design > Build > Deliver

The Corbin Wood Studios Tree-to-Table process involves several key steps: consultation, milling, drying, design, build, and delivery. Each stage is meticulously handled to ensure that the final product meets your expectations and retains the intrinsic qualities of the wood. By working with us, you can transform a fallen tree from your property into a cherished piece of furniture, preserving its legacy for years to come.

Step 1: Consultation

Timeline: 1-2 Weeks

Cost: We offer free tree-to-table consultation

The journey begins with a consultation. We'll visit your site to assess the fallen tree, discuss your vision, and determine the best approach for milling and crafting. This stage is crucial for understanding your needs and preferences, whether you're looking for live-edge slabs, custom tables, or other unique pieces. We will provide insights and suggestions to help you visualize the potential of the wood.

Step 2: Milling

Timeline: 3-6 Weeks

Cost: You can expect to pay between $795 -  $1,295 for most visits in the 5-8 hour range

Next, our mobile sawmill services come into play. We bring our sawmill directly to your location, eliminating the need for transporting heavy logs. Our team carefully mills the tree into slabs or boards, taking care to maximize the yield and preserve the tree's natural characteristics. Each cut is made with precision to ensure the highest quality and usability of the wood.

Step 3: Drying

Timeline: 12-24 months

Cost: No upfront cost for dry storage and kiln services

Once milled, the wood needs to be properly dried to prevent warping and cracking. We offer both air-drying storage and kiln drying services. Initially, the slabs are air-dried in our controlled storage environment, allowing them to acclimate gradually. After reaching a stable moisture content, the wood undergoes kiln drying to achieve the perfect balance, ensuring it is ready for crafting without compromising its integrity.

Step 4: Design

Timeline: 1-3 Weeks

Cost: No up front cost for the design process

With the wood prepared, the design phase begins. Our team collaborates with you to create a design that matches your vision and meets your functional needs. Whether you desire a rustic live-edge table, a sleek modern piece, or something entirely unique, our designers will sketch and plan every detail. Your input is vital during this stage to ensure the final product is a true reflection of your style and requirements.

Step 5: Build

Timeline: 8-10 weeks

Cost: Determined with the scope of your project

Once the design is finalized, our skilled craftsmen get to work. Using traditional woodworking techniques and modern technology, we transform the raw slabs into stunning furniture pieces. The natural beauty of the wood is highlighted through careful sanding, finishing, and assembly. Our attention to detail ensures that every joint, edge, and surface is perfect, resulting in a piece that is not only beautiful but also durable and functional.

Step 6: Deliver

Timeline: 1-2 weeks

Cost: $100-$300 depending on your location and size of your project

The final step is delivery. We understand the anticipation of seeing your custom piece, and we ensure it arrives safely and on time. Our team handles the transportation and setup, placing the furniture in your home exactly as envisioned. We take pride in delivering a product that exceeds your expectations, ready to be a cherished part of your living space.
